Tropical Surf Escape at Roots

Surf's up!

Roots Surfcamp & Yoga Retreat

Roots is a unique surf camp & yoga retreat offering surf and yoga packages located in the small fisher village Gerupuk, Lombok.
Known as one of the best places to learn surf in the world cause of its gentle waves, Lombok has some of the best reef
breaks and most consistent swell.

If you are an experienced beginner or intermediate surfer and looking for a tropical surf camp where you can fully realize your surfing potential in a professional way, you have come to the right place. Good to know is that we are definitely not a party surf camp. Don't get us wrong, we love to have fun, but rather in the water than at night. Our focus is to get the best out of you within a week, which unfortunately doesn't work if you're hungover. Please note that we are an adults-only retreat.

Note: Please be advised that our theoretical focus is on shortboarding and not specifically on longboard techniques.

Surf Levels

Experienced Beginner

  • Experienced beginners can comfortably stand on the board and are focusing on catching unbroken waves.
  • Experienced beginners learn about binary and dynamic wave selection; work on agility and prediction drills; angle your take off; create speed down the line; understand etiquette and know how to confidently and safely deal with any situation which may present itself to you.
  • Experienced beginner surfers focus on catching smaller, gentler waves to build confidence and control.
  • This level focuses on building consistency with fundamental skills.

Key Points

Improving Pop-Up and Surfing Stance: Pop-up should be more fluid, and surfers are developing better balance to stay up and ride for longer distances.

Turning the Board: Starting to practicing small turns, typically shifting weight slightly to control direction along the wave face.

Basic Positioning: Understanding where to sit in the lineup and how to paddle for waves is a focus here, as positioning can make or break a surfer’s ability to catch waves.

Low Intermediate

  • Low intermediate surfers trying consistently to catch their own waves without assistance. This level focuses on how to find the fastest trimming line, then how, why and when to perform horizontal carving changes of direction.
  • Low intermediate surfers have moved beyond the basics and are building a strong foundation in wave knowledge, positioning, and maneuvering.
  • Their style is beginning to look more fluid and consistent.
  • They are learning how to identify good waves to catch and understand where to position themselves in the lineup.

Key Points

Controlled Turns and Maneuvers: Surfers can perform basic maneuvers, like bottom turns and top turns, with more fluidity. They are working on linking these turns and using the wave’s face for more dynamic rides.

Understanding of Wave Dynamics: Surfers understand how waves break and can adapt their surfing style to ride different wave shapes and sizes, adjusting their body position to maintain speed and control.

Intermediate

  • Intermediate surfers have a strong foundation in wave knowledge, positioning, and maneuvering.
  • They have already developed their own style and mostly using their own surfboards and are able to pass incoming breaking waves by duck diving.
  • They can identify good waves to catch and understand where to position themselves in the lineup. They have a better sense of timing and can catch waves with greater accuracy and without assistance.
  • This level focuses on how to find the fastest trimming line, and how, why and when to perform horizontal carving changes of direction.

Key Points

Maneuvers: Learning new maneuvers like cut back and floater: At this level you start to step out of your comfort zone to try and learn new maneuvers to keep the pocket of the wave, pass breaking sections of the waves and climb on top of white water sections, rather than going below them.
